Use watercolor paint to add color or detail to your wood carvings. The paint can be sunk into the wood to show the grain. The tubes and cakes are both available in watercolor paint. These are thicker and less likely not to drip. Remember that water-based paintings can be damaged by dust or wood shavings. If you don't have time to paint, apply a thin coat of primer.

Oil-based paints

Oil-based paints can be used to paint wood carvings. Some woods, like maple or birch, are better suited for oil-based painting. Avoid oil-based oils if you are painting kitchen utensils. There are some other advantages of oil-based paints for wood carvings.

Watercolors

It is fun to paint wood with watercolours. Watercolors do not tend to warp. However, they do require a good amount of prep work. Sandpaper can be an useful tool, but for the central section of your wood carve you will want to use a finegrit sandpaper. This will allow the watercolor pigments to pop out and make the wood look more framed. To ensure safety, wear protective glasses and a dust-removal bag.

Gesso

You must prepare your piece before you start painting wood carvings. You can use either the student or artist grade of gesso. Student grade is typically white; artist grade is thicker. Acrylic paint can be added to more pigmented colors. You will need to mix gesso with paint to achieve the desired color. Once the gesso dries, apply several thin coats (or more) of paint.

Oil-based oil paints mixed with gesso

Gesso, a mixture of animal glues (whiting) is the name. It is often white, but it can also be found in black, colored and transparent versions. The type of gesso you choose will determine the consistency. Some brands will apply smoothly, while others will leave a toothy finish. You can try different types of gesso until you find your preferred consistency. Liquitex Super Heavy Gesso would be a great choice to add sculptural effects to a canvas. Use a palette knives to apply it.

Basswood panel

Before you begin painting your basswood panel with paint, make sure that you seal it properly. Wood's natural substances can lead to paint deterioration. Sealers make the wood surface smooth and uniform, preventing paint from penetrating the wood pores. Properly sealing the wood will improve its durability. Here are some tips to seal your basswood panel for maximum protection. Make sure you use the right sealer for your panel.

Sealing coats

You must follow all instructions when applying a sealer on wood carvings. Use a paintbrush and apply the sealer thinly to the entire sculpture. Before applying the next coat, let the sealer dry completely. Once the sealer has dried, sand the carving lightly to remove any excess coating. If you have a very fine carving, skip this step.

Using gesso

Apply gesso to the back and front surfaces of your wood carving before you begin painting. This gesso is usually thinner than student-grade, and will absorb more paint. For greater pigmentation, you can mix it with acrylic painting. But it's not necessary. The thickness of the gesso is dependent on the amount of paint you plan to use.

Choosing a wood

It is essential to choose the correct wood for painting wood carvings. The paint can change the physical dimensions. Choose a lighter, neutral wood to allow you to paint over and highlight dark tones. You can always paint the wood with a darker shade if it is too dark. You will need to choose neutral wood to paint, no matter how large or small the piece.

Pre-treatments

Many wood carvings can be painted or colored. These works of wood art require pre-treatment in order to prevent oils, water, and paints leaking through. This is especially true with softwoods like basswood that are highly absorbent. You can paint wood carvings with a special wood-based painting, but you should follow some guidelines to avoid any problems. This article will explain how to pre-treat wood.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This works well if the wood is straight and smooth. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will ensure that the joint doesn't split.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow the wood to rest for five minutes before clamping it together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried completely, you can clamp the pieces together until they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries, trim any excess wood around your joint.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
