Chainsaw Wood Carving

how to measure and cut

Many artists are discovering the beauty of chainsaw wood carving. The art is a natural extension of their skill set and often involves a combination of traditional carving techniques and modern designs. Crager and his wife, Tracie Dugas, have carved beautiful wood creations since the 1960s. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters are now involved in his work as well, helping out on occasion with painting or staining. They prefer white pine because it is lighter than other types of pine and is less likely to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw woodcarver from Reedsport, Oregon. Anderson, a Poughkeepsie-native, lives with his family. Anderson holds several degrees in the fine arts and teaches art to children in the Pre-K to fifth grades. Anderson has created many sculptures on Long Island, and even one in Colorado. His pieces include standing trees as well as smaller pieces such corn ear sculptures. He is currently working on a sign to Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. Chainsaw wood carving makes it a better choice than hammers, chisels, and hammers. They can also be recycled. Anderson is a word-of mouth marketer and has carved a large cobra and a great Blue Heron for Wading Water's mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

The life-size wizard carved from wood by Tracie Dugas is an impressive example of her skill as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49-yearold lives in Clare Nova Scotia between Digby, Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was one of several artists who exhibited their work during the Canada Day weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. While the Sydney waterfront was overflowing with tourists, it provided an opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy the waterfront as well as a chance to catch a glimpse at the chainsaw carver.

Tim Crager

Although Tim Crager wasn't an artist, and was only slightly skilled with a chainsaw at the time, his passion for carving became a full-time job six years ago. Crager has sold over $1 million in carvings throughout the Eastern U.S. Crager was born in Garrett in Eastern Kentucky and grew up following a chainsaw woodcarver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager prefers white pine when it comes to wood choice. It's readily available from tree trimming businesses. However, many people prefer other kinds of wood. Crager works with the grain of wood as a guide and let the saw do the rest. While Crager usually knows exactly what he's going to make before he begins a project, he will often change his mind mid-project. The creation of small projects takes only an hour. However, larger carvings can take from 33 to 36 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is an expert chainsaw and wooden carver. His wood carvings often include many animals and are very detailed. His creations have attracted the attention of both tourists and neighbours. The chainsaw sculptures are so large and detailed that they adorn the entrance and coffee shop at Blue Arrow Farm. Blue Arrow Farm's owner is Don Oriolo. He also manages Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. Although he was an experienced wood carver, he had never used one before. His carvings now feature an otter, mother bear and squirrel looking out of a tree. And now, he's ready to compete at the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

How To

How do I accurately measure wood?

There are many methods for measuring wood. We use a digital caliper (a tool used to measure distances), a laser level (used to make sure your work surface is flat), and a bubble level (used to make sure your work surface is perpendicular).

A digital caliper has two jaws that open and close. The first jaw holds the object, and the second measures the distance between them. The digital caliper is great for measuring small distances like thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels are equipped with an infrared light beam, which projects a line across a floor. A red dot is created by the laser. It is possible to see if the surface of the surface are even by looking down at it. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The device has a bubble at its center. As long as the bubble remains centered, the device can tell you if the surface has been leveled. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
