FAQ

Is it necessary to be a genius in woodworking to succeed?

No. Woodworking is not rocket science. To create stunning works of art, anyone can learn to use basic power tools.

What's the difference?

Hobbyists enjoy creating things out of wood. Professionals tend to focus on the quality. Hobbyists often take pride in the creations they make and often share them to family and friends. Professionals will spend hours researching designs before they begin working on a project. They'll be meticulous about every aspect of their work, from choosing the best materials to finishing it perfectly.

This is a job that I can make a living from.

Yes! Many woodworkers are already doing so. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual woodworker wage was $34,000 in May 2012. This is significantly higher than the national average, which is $31,000 per year.

How can a woodworker start making money?

Many people are starting to learn how to build furniture because they want to start an online business. However, if you're just getting into furniture building, there are other options than selling on Etsy. You could sell at craft fairs or local events. A workshop could also be offered for people who are interested to learn how they can build their own furniture. Perhaps you have some experience as a carpenter/builder and would like to offer your services, such as remodeling homes and creating custom pieces.

Is there anything else I should know about woodworking?

It is easy to underestimate how much work it takes to make furniture. Finding the right wood for the project is the hardest part. There are so many wood options that it can be difficult to choose the right one.

A problem is that wood doesn't have the same properties. Wooden can split or crack, while some woods may warp. These are important considerations to make before you purchase wood.

Statistics

  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)

How To

How to drive a nails in wood

The first step in driving a nail into wood is to choose the correct size and type of hammer. The most common types of hammers are claw hammers, sledgehammers, mallets, ball peen hammers, and hatchets. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A claw hammer works well when you're trying to hit nails with a heavy hammer. However it is difficult to precisely control where the blow hits. A sledgehammer is great for hitting large areas at once, but it's too heavy to use effectively for smaller tasks.

Place your hand flat on the side of your chosen hammer so that the handle rests in your palm. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. You should hold the hammer straight-up, with your wrist still relaxed. Next, swing the hammer toward the ground and aim for the nail's center. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Try swinging a hammer using a block wood to practice until you are comfortable.

When you're ready to start driving the nail, hold the hammer in front of you close to your body. To ensure that the nail is perpendicular on the surface of the wooden floor, position it. Keep your focus on the tip of each nail. Move the hammer forward and then continue to move the hammerhead. This can be repeated several times to increase the speed of your swing. Try adding power to your swings when you've mastered the technique. Try holding the hammer above your shoulder and bring it down forcefully. This way, you'll be able to put more energy behind your blows.

After you have nailed the hole, take the hammer off the nail. To pull out the remaining nails, use a screwdriver or pry bar. You should ensure that the nails are flush with the board's surface to avoid splitting the wood.
