FAQ

How can a woodworker start making money?

Many people learn how to make furniture in order to set up an online business. You don't have to sell on Etsy if your furniture is just beginning. You could sell at craft fairs or local events. You could also offer workshops to help others learn how to make their own furniture. Perhaps you have some experience as a carpenter/builder and would like to offer your services, such as remodeling homes and creating custom pieces.

How can I learn basic woodworking skills

You can start building furniture by making a bench. This project can be done with any kind of wood that you have at home. You don't need to know which type of wood you should use. Instead, get some pine boards at Lowes or Home Depot. After you've constructed your bench you'll want sand all the rough edges off and varnish it.

How do I know what tools are best suited for me?

When shopping for tools, it helps to think about your needs and preferences. Do you prefer metal handles or plastic? What size screws and nails do you use most often? Would you rather use hand tools than power tools?

Where can you buy hardwood lumber?

Home Depot offers hardwood lumber. You will find a range of wood products available at Home Depot.

There is also a wide selection of engineered hardwoods, including Ipe (Araucaria Angustifolia), Brazilian Cherry(Pau d'Arco), Mahogany (Swietenia Mcrophylla).

You can search Google for hardwood lumber to find them online.

Do you have any other information I should know about woodworking and/or the process of making it?

It is easy for people to overlook the work involved in furniture making. The hardest part of the process is actually finding the right wood. There are so many varieties of wood available that choosing one can be difficult.

Another problem is that not all wood has uniform properties. Some woods will crack or warp with time. Others will split or crack. You must take these things into consideration before purchasing wood.

How much does a hobbyist need to invest in getting started?

A lot of capital is required to purchase the necessary supplies and tools if you want to start your own woodworking shop. Start by getting a small circular saw saw, drill press or circular saw. These items aren't very expensive, so you won't break the bank.

How To

How to make wooden joints

This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. We will use the pocket hole joint, which is drilling holes in the wood to join them. If your wood is straight and flat, this method will work well. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. First, measure the area where you wish to place the pocket joint. With a handheld drill machine or jig saw, drill 3/4-inch deep holes in the ends of each piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will help ensure that the joint won't split later.
  3. Glue together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Attach the Pieces together. After the glue has dried you can attach the pieces to form a flush joint.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trimming the joinery after glue has completely dried.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
