Simple whittling tasks are simple and cost-effective for the Woodcarving merit award badge. Name tags and badges make great projects for whittling. Scouts may also opt to whittle badges with wood burning. Plaques are a good example of larger pieces that can be used for whittling.

Superhero logos are straightforward

While there are lots of superhero movies to choose from these days, many of the logos are very simple and easy to carve. The bat is a great start, as is the diamond S on Superman's shield. The Spiderman's web design is simple, and the Joker card is easy to carve. After the Cub Scouts master the art of whittling the logo they can decorate a mirror or dresser with the final product.

Shazam! The background of the Shazam! logo features a cloudy dark blue sky. To represent the comic book story, this logo features three-dimensional text with lighting. Logos are often used by superheroes to illustrate their stories. But, the whittling projects for cubscouts could also be about branding and businesses. Superheroes tend to be associated with comics, but superhero logos make it possible to connect the two worlds.

Morfmir's whittled set of chess pieces

A whittled chess set makes a great project for the cub scouts' Webelos Craftsman activity badge. Set includes instructions as well as a parts list. A hardware chess set is easy to make, and the kids can enjoy playing a game once the project is finished.

A boy scout from New Hampshire created this unique set of chess pieces. Chandler Francis received a metalworking merit badge. He made the pieces at the blacksmithing Pavilion. The "Sinquefield invention Lab," named after Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield's late wife, teaches Scouts to use new technologies and provides hands-on education. This project required the use of a laser and a 3D printer.

Woodcarving ranks as one of the most popular Cub Scout elective medals. It is possible to earn it either as a cub and an older boy. This badge requires basic woodcarving techniques, as well as safety and tools. Scouts can complete the Woodcarving requirements in their councils, or through a special camp. Here are some tips on earning this badge:

The key to this badge is a well-knit knife. You can use a small, well-sharpened folder or pocket knife to complete this badge. While thumb guards made of ducttape are not required, they can prove to be very useful. Another option is to use duct-tape reinforced leather gloves. This will protect your hands, while still allowing you to hold a sharp blade. These items will be needed to be safe during the entire project.

Woodcarving with a pocketknife

This activity is perfect if you want to teach Cub Scouts how safely to use a Pocketknife. You can have fun creating unique crafts with the right safety techniques and a sharp blade. Woodcarving is a great way to show them knife skills, as well as a safe, light touch.

Another craft that is fun to do is carving an animal. Carving an animal can be quite challenging. Cubs may choose to carve the animal they love. You can teach your Cubs about animals by carving them. You can even help them learn about them while they're doing it! Here are some ideas for a fun woodcarving project for your Cub Scouts.

To introduce the Scouts to the idea of woodcarving, they can use soap. Soap makes it easy for Scouts to carve, and is also safe to use. Once they feel confident with soap they can begin woodcarving. They can make spears, peel bark off sticks and even build tipis or slingshots!

How To

How do I accurately measure wood?

We have several ways to measure wood. We use a digital caliper (a tool used to measure distances), a laser level (used to make sure your work surface is flat), and a bubble level (used to make sure your work surface is perpendicular).

Two jaws can be opened and closed on a digital caliper. One jaw holds the measured object while the other measures the distance between the two points. Digital calipers are great for measuring small distances, such as thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels use an infrared beam of light to project a line across the ground. A red dot is created by the laser. The line can be viewed down to determine if the surface has an even surface. Laser levels are best for checking the accuracy of large surfaces.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. There is a bubble in the center of the device. As long the bubble is not in the middle, the device will show you whether the surface of the object is level. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
