The Basics of Spindle Turnering

woodworking shop setup

Spindle turning is not difficult at first. However, it requires several basic concepts. Nick Cook, a professional, shares some of these principles in order to achieve optimal results. First, never cut uphill on the spindle. This will cause plenty of catches and disastrous results. Also, ensure that your tool rest is the same height as your tools. Thin tools will require a greater tool rest than those with thicker blades. In general, you should avoid any catches by cutting above center.

Tools

There are many tools that can be used to assist you in spindle-turning. For this task, a spindle gouge and a skew-chisel are essential. You can use either of these tools for turning spindles. Each tool has its own design and is suitable for various profiles. Make sure to choose the spindle-gouge that fits your needs. A skew chisel is used to turn a beaded pikel.

Materials

A spinning tool requires a combination of several tools in order to produce the finished product. A spindle-turning machine can turn virtually any kind of workpiece. The spindle's diameter, or hole diameter, indicates the minimum size of a workpiece that can pass through it. For example, a minilathe's spindle hole diameter is 3/4", but it can be safely reamed to 13/16". The hole's front is tapered to allow for tooling.

Rosewood

Rosewood spindles could be a good choice if your passion is woodturning. The exotic hardwood can be found in a variety of stunning colors as well as a natural glow. The wood turns easily on a lathe, and its three-inch square blanks are ideal for short spindle turning projects. You might be interested in a more challenging wood like Patagonian Rosewood.

Hickory

Hickory is an excellent choice if you're looking for a wood that can be used to make spindles. It can be challenging to work with this type of wood by hand but once you get the hang of it, you'll enjoy the rustic beauty of your creations. Many woodworkers like hickory because of its strength and resilience, but also for its open grain pattern and color variation.

Hardwoods

Consider the type of turning that you are looking for when choosing woods to spindle turn. There are many hardwoods you can use. You can purchase spindle blanks already turned but you need to select the best ones. Look for hardwoods like cherry, maple, and ash that are sustainable. This will make it possible to turn them as many times as you need. Hardwoods for spindle turning can be hard, but they will provide a good, sturdy base for the finished product.

Woodturning machinery

The first thing to consider when shopping for a spindle turning machine is the size. Woodturning tools tend to be heavy. The larger the spindle turning machine, then the heavier it will be. The edge of the tool is another thing to watch out for. The smaller the tool's edge, the less the chance of it grabbing the wood. Because cutting downhill can be more difficult to control, it could result in your tool grasping the wood and pulling it out of the hilt.

FAQ

What is the minimum investment a hobbyist needs to make in order to get started?

It is likely that you will need some capital in order to buy the required tools and supplies if your goal is to open your own woodworking business. The best place to start is by buying a small drill press, circularsaw, circular saw or sanding machine. These items aren't very expensive, so you won't break the bank.

How do I organize my shop?

First, make sure you have a designated space for tools storage. Make sure your tools are clean and free of debris and dust so they can be used properly. Hang tools and accessories using pegboard hooks.

Is it possible to open my own woodworking shop?

It is difficult to start your own woodworking company. You will need to adhere to many legal requirements. This doesn't necessarily mean that you should go through all the work of setting up a company. Many people opt to join existing businesses instead. You only need to pay membership and tax fees.

What woods are suitable for making furniture?

Woods are classified based on their hardness. Softwoods include cedar, pine, cedar, and Cypress. They're often used for outdoor furniture because they don't rot easily. The hardwoods are oak, maple and mahogany. Because they can't weather outside, they're usually used indoors.

How To

How to stain hardwood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction changes the wood's color from white to brownish. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Some methods include mixing the stain along with a solvent like turpentine and then applying the mixture to the wood by brushing or spraying. Another method involves applying a solution of water to the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

Preparing your wood for staining is the first thing to do. To apply the stain, clean the wood completely. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. Next, you need to decide which stain you want. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Light colors such as maple work well with non-penetrating stain.

After deciding on the type of stain, you want to apply, prepare your tools. Paintbrushes are great for applying stain because they allow you to evenly spread the liquid across the surface. It is a good idea to have rags on hand in case you need them to clean up any stains that may remain after you have finished painting. You should have enough containers to store the various components of the stain mixture if you intend to mix it yourself.

After you have prepared your materials for staining, clean the area. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

The stain should be applied next. Next, apply the stain to the furniture by starting at one end. You should work slowly and carefully. Continue moving along the grain until you reach your opposite end. Keep the stain from dripping off the wood's surface. Before proceeding to the next step, let the stain dry thoroughly.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat, which should dry overnight, to dry before sanding.
