DIY Nightstand with Hidden Compartment, Drawer and Storage

connecting mitered corners

A DIY nightstand can be a good idea if you have extra room or you need to store more items. You can easily create a storage unit that fits under your bed using a few simple plans. You can also install a magnetic lock on one or both compartments. Once the project has been completed, you can modify it by adding foam inserts into the top and/or bottom compartments.

Make a DIY nightstand using a drawer and hidden compartment

First, cut the onex12 boards to make a DIY nightstand. Your side panels must be identically measured. They should fit together perfectly. You can mark the tenons on the sides of both boards to make sure that your drawers fit squarely. Next, glue all the pieces together and secure them with finish nails.

Ikea furniture can also make a DIY bedside table. These are known to be versatile and customizable. These pieces can also serve other purposes such as books and other items. These pieces are inexpensive and can be replicated easily if there is enough wood. They can be customized to your specific room's decor by being made as unique pieces.

Install a deadbolt lock

A hidden compartment nightstand is a type of bedside table that has two drawers and is designed with bedroom security in mind. Hidden compartments below and above the main drawer make it a safe way to store valuables. Each compartment can be accessed in a different way, and each compartment is locked when it is closed. The nightstand is invisible from the exterior and has the appearance of a standard nightstand.

You will need to drill a small hole into the top or bottom of your nightstand in order to install a magnetic lock. After drilling the hole, place the magnetic lock on the face of the compartment. To open the drawer push the magnet with one side. To install a hidden magnetic lock, you can purchase a lock from a hardware store or online. This step is optional.

Add foam inserts for the top and/or bottom compartments

If you are looking to build a nightstand with more storage space, you can add two storage compartments to your design. The dimensions of the upper compartment are 13" x 2", and the bottom is 13 x 2.5". Both compartments feature felt-lined interiors. The hidden compartment nightstand plans feature a two-step access system. To add additional storage, foam inserts can also be added to either the top or bottom drawers.

FAQ

What is the difference between a hobbyist woodworker and a professional woodworker.

Hobbyists like making things with wood. Professionals focus more on quality. Hobbyists often take pride in the creations they make and often share them to family and friends. Before they start working on a project, professionals will spend hours researching the designs. They will pay attention to every detail, from selecting the best materials to finishing the project perfectly.

What furniture can I refinish?

Yes! You don't have to hire a professional to refinish furniture. There are many ways you can do it yourself. Here are a few ideas:

To remove stains and scratches, use sandpaper. Use a clean cloth to wipe the surface.

Clear polyurethane varnish should be applied. Before moving furniture, let dry completely.

Acrylic paint is a great way to paint furniture.

Use stain instead of paint. Furniture will look richer with the stain.

Use shellac wax. This will protect and shine the wood.

How do I know what type of wood I'm dealing with?

Always inspect the label when buying wood. The label should detail the wood species, its moisture content and whether it has been treated or not.

Is there anything else I should know about woodworking?

It is easy for people to overlook the work involved in furniture making. Finding the right type of wood is the most difficult aspect of this process. It is difficult to choose between the various types of wood.

Another problem is the fact that not all wood has the same properties. Some woods will crack or warp with time. Others will split or crack. These things should be considered before you buy wood.

Statistics

  • Most woodworkers agree that lumber moisture needs to be under 10% for building furniture. (woodandshop.com)
  • Average lumber prices rose about 600 percent between April 2020 and May 2021. (familyhandyman.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)

How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood is the process of applying chemicals to the wood's exterior, which alters its color. This chemical reaction changes the wood's color from white to brownish. While oak is the most widely used type of wood for staining purposes, other types of wood are also available.

There are several ways to apply stains to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. You can also mix stains with varnishes or paints so that they become part the finish coating.

Preparing the surface is the most important step in staining wooden surfaces. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding the wood removes scratches and imperfections. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stain penetrates deeper into wood than nonpenetrating, making them suitable for dark colors like mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

You will need to decide on the type of stain you want to use, and then prepare your tools. The best tool for applying stains is a paintbrush. It allows you to evenly distribute the liquid over the surface. After you're done painting, make sure to have some rags handy to remove any excess stain. If you are planning to mix your stain, ensure you have enough containers for each component.

After you have prepared your materials for staining, clean the area. Clean the area with soap and warm water to get rid of dirt and grime. You can wipe down the entire furniture using a damp rag with clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Apply the stain next. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Move slowly and carefully along the grain of your wood until you reach its opposite end. Keep the stain from dripping off the wood's surface. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat, which should dry overnight, to dry before sanding.
