How To

How to stain hardwood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. The most common type of wood used for staining is oak, although many other types of wood can be stained.

There are many methods to apply stain to wood surfaces. You can mix the stain with a solvent, such as turpentine, and spray it onto the wood. Others use a solution made up of water and dye, which is then applied directly onto the wood. The stain can be mixed with paints and varnishes to become part of the final coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding smoothens scratches and rough spots. The next step is to choose the stain type you want. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating and non-penetrating wood stains penetrate deeper than other types, making them perfect for dark colors like mahogany. Light colors such as maple work well with non-penetrating stain.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. Because you can spread the stain evenly with a paintbrush, it is ideal for applying them. To remove any stains left behind after painting, you will need some rags. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

Once you have prepared all your materials, it is time to clean the areas where you will stain the wood. Clean the area with soap and warm water to get rid of dirt and grime. You can wipe down the entire furniture using a damp rag with clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Apply the stain. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Slowly and carefully move along the grain of wood, slowly but steadily, until you reach the other end. The stain should not drip off of the wood's edge. Let the stain dry completely before proceeding with the next steps.

A coat of clear polyurethane sealing agent is applied to protect the paint. Three coats of polyurethane sealing agent are required. Allow the third coat of polyurethane sealer to dry overnight before applying the final coat.
